Calling North American planetarium owners - Astrotour 2010
Dear all,
You may have received an email from me earlier in the year - if so, then I'd like to re-introduce myself. If not, my name is David Ault, a young British astronomer, science communicator and actor. Next year I am planning a grand tour of North America's planetaria volunteering for charity. My plans were brought up at the IPS meeting at the beginning of July where they were warmly received; I am now looking to generate more interest on this forum.
I would like to present an ordinary night-sky show in as many US planetaria as I can in 6 months and do some voluntary work with your team over a few days next year. This is not a solicitation for funds; I would not be asking for any pay or accommodation, just the opportunity to see and use your planetarium.
My current schedule is quite flexible, but will start in California, work north to the top of the States and then east, hitting Toronto for my cousin's wedding in mid-May, then continuing clockwise around North America, ending in California and Hawaii in September. If you are wondering how I will afford this, I plan to couchsurf (www.couchsurfing.org) and take public transport as much as possible, keeping costs down to a minimum. I also plan to get sponsorship from a number of places. If I can't, then I'm willing to invest my own money in having an amazing trip throughout North America.
I have presented in Birmingham’s Thinktank planetarium for three years (full and part time) and currently present the Jodcast, a twice-monthly astronomy podcast. I am also putting together a team to harness new media publicity, through blogs and Twitter so that people can follow my journey. I'm planning to review all the science centres I visit and hopefully provide good publicity as I go.
