The Planetarium Network

Teaching People to Dream

OK - Rovy's been doing all the talking. I'm trying to get my picture to upload; not sure if it's working or not. I'm also trying to decide which one - me today, my favorite from xx years ago, or the baby picture. Or maybe one of Molly, but then I'll have to take the comments about "what a dog." :) Hey - she is very cute.

I like having the images, btw - perhaps seeing who you're replying to will help shape the replies?

The internet world is heading this way, and it makes sense that the planetarium world keep up, especially when it comes to stopping spam.

Now, for serious question: at Farrell (Pa), my other planetarium, we're looking at a new video projector. Anyone have any luck with DLP projectors? They're claiming true black with 15000:1 contrast ratio (and I've seen 30000:1 as well) - and only about $5000. That's better than a high-end Barco -

I should check out the archives on the fulldome list, but this is a serious question to get us going.

I am going to activate some additional components to the system, such as video sharing too. Thanks for making some test posts when you get the chance!

Sharon, DLP gives a better black than LCD, but still not true black as we need in our domes. Here at Rio we had a DLP in the dome and it was far from true "planetarium" black, it was a great machine from Christie, but couldn't deliver the high contrast we need.

The best choice still CRT or LCD/DLP for Fulldome, so you can't see the gray window.

Maybe if you test a DLP projector in your dome and use a 60% thin film in front of it? It will depends on your dome size of course, but can be a good start.

As many domes will need to change their projectors soon or even the older domes will get video projectors to survive a little more without Fulldome, this discussion can be of great help to our fellows planetarians.

Let us know if you made any progress on that.

I'll keep everyone informed of the results - we're trying to get machines on loan for trial. If that happens, I'll see them in both 30- and 40-ft domes.

we're using a commercial panasonic 5600 dlp and true black it is not. its a nice projector, dont get me wrong. it has slew of inputs, you can hardwire the most utilized functions to pushbuttons on your console, it has dual lamps, it has a capacitor bank to keep the fans blowing in case of power failure, and it has a shutter. all in all its a great buy for the $4500 or so we paid but the only way to get true black on it is hit the shutter button!

So what I'm gathering is their claims of "true black" are - hmm - overoptimistic? Then, to be fair, I suppose what's true black to the home theater user is not the same as true black to us.

Thanks Sandro and Robert ..

yeah pretty much. our true black expectations are beyond what the average home theater person could ever expect.
