How do I change the email address I use for Dome-L?
There are a couple of ways to do this.

1.      PREFERRED METHOD: Log in to www.topica.com and change your account yourself.  See "How do I log in to Topica.com to manage my own email address?".  Once you are logged into Topica, click on MyTopica (at the top of the page), then click “Email Addresses” on the left side of the page, click “New Address,” add your new address, then delete your old address.

2.      The brute force method: unsubscribe from Dome-L with your current address and then go to the online subscription form and fill that out.  You will get an invitation from Topica.  Follow the directions in the email to finalize the subscription.

3.      If you no longer have access to your old email address, simply fill out the online subscription form and make a note that this is an address change and give the old email address in  the comments area.

How do I get each message individually, rather than as a digest?
Your welcome message had instructions on how to do this.  Look at “How do I log in to Topica.com to manage my own email address?” to log in and you can change how you get Dome-L messages there.

Why did I get signed up to get messages in the digest form?
Most people prefer the digest because it means fewer message coming to their inbox.  So, the default for a new subscriber is the digest form of the list.

What is the purpose of Dome-L?
Dome-L is a mailing list for those working in the planetarium field.  The purpose of the list is to discuss issues related to working in or running a planetarium.

Who would want to subscribe to Dome-L?
People working in a planetarium, those in businesses that support the work in a planetarium (vendors, show creators, voice artists, space artists, NASA outreach officials, etc.)

I am not in the planetarium field but would like to learn more about space and astronomy, is Dome-L a good place for that?
No.  Dome-L focuses on such exciting issues as: what kind of seats work best in a planetarium, light bulbs for star projectors, the best way to deal with rowdy 3rd graders during a show, ticketing systems, etc.  While there are sometimes discussions about space and astronomy, they are related to teaching in a planetarium and not general knowledge questions.  Planetarium.Net might be opening a list for general astronomy learning in the future.

What is the difference between Dome-L and Planetarium.Net?
Dome-L is an email list. Planetarium.Net runs Dome-L and also offers a web-based community for people in the planetarium field.  Each of these are separate services but you can subscribe to both through the same form.  You will need to log in to each of these services separately.

Can I see a list of all Dome-L subscribers?
No.  This feature has been discontinued at the request of a number of subscribers who were concerned about privacy and spam.  At least 2 attempts to gain the list of addresses by spammers have been directed at the moderator.  If you need the address of a specific Dome-l subscriber, send a message to the list!

How can I find the Dome-L archive or see old messages I missed?
Log into Topica.com and click Dome-L.  You can see and search all of the old messages from Dome-L.  See “How do I log in to Topica.com to manage my own email address?” for information about logging into Topica.com.

What is Topica.com and why is it used for Dome-L?
Topica.com is a commercial email service but has a free service for mailing lists.  It has a number of features that make list moderation easier and, because it is not affiliated with a specific institution, any change in list moderation will be easier.  The Dome-L moderator is constantly assessing the viability of the service and looking at potential new options for the future.

How do I report a problem with Planetarium.Net or Dome-L?

AFTER you have reviewed this FAQ list and worked through the steps mentioned here, if your problem is still unanswered, then submit a trouble report.  If the answer to your problem is on this page, you will simply be redirected here!

I am a Dome-l subscriber and I have stopped getting email from the list, what is the problem?
There could be a number of problems and here are some steps to take to find out what is wrong:

1.      Check the Planetarium.Net homepage.  Any known problems affecting the whole list will be noted in the News space at the top of the page.

2.      Check your email address status with Topica.com ( See “How do I log in to Topica.com to manage my own email address?”)

3.      Make sure you are still subscribed to Topica.com and that your status is “on.”

4.      If your email address is still on the list and the account was not off, then:

a.        Your email server administrator might have installed filtering software that blocks “mass” email or is specifically set to block Topica.com.  Contact your IT department or whoever provides your email service to see if they can allow Dome-L to come through.

b.      If you have Yahoo, check your bulk mail folder to see if your Dome-L mailings are there (other services have similar features, check these first!).

c.       Check the settings of any personal filtering you might have in your email program (Outlook, Messenger, etc.) to see of Dome-l is being automatically deleted.

5.      If you have completed this steps and are still not getting Dome-L, then submit a trouble report.  Do NOT email the moderator with a problem because you will simply be redirected back to this FAQ page.

I did not do anything rude or offensive and my email address does not appear to be on Dome-L or was turned off.  Why?
1. Your address was probably “bouncing” to the list.  If your email server returns an email to Dome-L, saying your account is bad (this could happen if your email account no longer exists, your email server happens to be down when a Dome-l message was sent, squirrels have chewed through a line delivering the email to you, or any number of reasons) then Topica turns your account off  to keep bad email address from jamming the system.  Most of the time this is temporary and your account will be restored.  If, however, your account bounces more than 5 times, it is deleted from Dome-L.  Just go to the online form and re-subscribe.

2. You went out of town and turned on one of those annoying auto-responders saying you are out of town.  These vacation messages come back to the list each time Dome-L goes to your email and the moderator has to deal with them.  He has probably turned off your account.  See “How do I log in to Topica.com to manage my own email address?” to turn your account back on.

I sent a message to Dome-L and I got a rejection message from Topica.com saying I must be a member of the list, why?  Am I a bad person?
While it is possible you might be a bad person, that is probably not the reason for the rejection.

1.      Only subscribers can send messages to the list.  Make sure you are subscribed to Dome-L.  (See How do I log in to manage my account? To determine whether your address is subscribed).

2.      You MUST send to the list from the email address that is subscribed to the list (this is how Dome-L “knows” you are a member).  This is a very common issue for people who have addresses that forward or have had aliases set up when email changes (particularly at colleges and universities).  For example if you subscribe as bob@greatcollege.edu but your email return address or your “real” email address is bob.sunshineserver@greatcollege.edu, even though they go to the same email box, you will get Dome-L ok but, you will not be able to send to the list.

3.      If these issues are not involved, then fill out a trouble report.  Copy and paste the body of the rejection email into the trouble report.

I did NOT get a rejection email from Dome-L but an email I sent has not appeared on the list, what happened?
If you get no email digest at all, make sure you check the Planetarium.Net homepage for any known technical issues.

1.      If you get the digest form of the list, your message might not come out until the next day, wait and see if it comes out in the next digest.

2.      Each message is individually examined for content by a highly-trained list moderator.  While this person is exceptional and efficient, sometimes life happens and messages are not put through to the list within 24 hours.  Please wait for a couple of days before questioning whether the message went through to the list.

3.      The moderation of messages occurs at different times of the day depending on the moderator’s schedule.  If a message goes through later in the day, it is possible it might not get looked at until the next day (meaning it will be the day after that before it is published).

4.      Think about the message you sent, was it potentially offensive, inflammatory, or unrelated to the list purpose? If so, it was probably rejected by the moderator, however, you will usually get an explanation by email if this is the case.

I sent an email to the list and I am already getting people replying back to me.  I have not seen the message appear on the list.  How is this possible?  Is something wrong with my subscription?
Probably not.  Some people choose to get each message from Dome-l individually.  If an account is set to get each individual message sent to the list, then each message comes through to them instantly.  If you get the digest, then it might be the next day before you see your message.
